History of Mugappair Church

Fr. Joy Alappat started the first Holy Eucharist at Spartan school Auditorium, which was the initial step towards the historical entry to the Syro-Malabar Catholic Community Mugappair Chennai thanks to Shri. Jacob Koshy and Smt. Anna Jacob Koshy, who were the Managing Director and Principal of Spartan School.

For the Syro-Malabar Catholics of Mugappair, 3rd December 2000 was a memorable day, when His Excellency Mar James Pazhayattil, the Bishop of Irinjalakuda and the Bishop in charge of Syro-Malabar Catholic Mission Chennai, and His Excellency Most Rev. Lawrence Pius Dorairaj, Auxiliary Bishop Madras-Mylapore consecrated the Holy Cross Church at Perumal Nagar, Mugappair.

The leaders devoted and committed themselves to work along with the Unit Director. They also shared the responsibilities in the construction of the Church. The Unit Director, Rev. Fr. Jojo Thonduparampil supported them with his prayers and guidance for the construction and development of the unit.

All this started when the Malayalee Catholics in and around Mugappair, Ambattur, Padi, Korattur, Anna Nagar and Koyambedu came together in the year 1992 and had decided to have their liturgical celebrations and worship in their own language and culture. So, as a community they approached Rev. Fr. Joy Alappat, who was the chaplain of St. Thomas Pastoral Centre, Ayanavaram and expressed their desire to have Holy Mass in Malayalam every Sunday at Mugappair. In view of their representation, Rev. Fr. Joy Alappat told them to find a venue to celebrate the Holy Eucharist on Sundays for the community.
